How to identify the cow
Last checked 2026-10-28.
The hard tell is the transform. The moment the cow equips the knife, the human avatar becomes a cow with the knife in its mouth. Putting the knife away restores the human model. Everything else — following loners, stopping in doorways, hovering near a dropped gun — is behavior the wikis list, not an official tell sheet.
How strong each tell is
“Looks suspicious” is not a tell. Hats, eye size, and golden skins are cosmetics.
| Tell | Strength | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Avatar becomes a cow with a knife | Strong | Fandom describes the model change |
| Knife-equip animation | Strong | Same transform, seen from the side |
| Following a player who is alone | Medium | Wiki behavior note |
| Stopping in a doorway | Medium | Wiki behavior note |
| Waiting near a dropped gun | Medium | Wiki behavior note |
| Odd cosmetics or a “weird” walk | Weak | No source ties cosmetics to the role |
What to do with the tell
Security wins the gunfight only against the cow. Fandom says shooting a researcher kills Security as well, so calling a name before the shot matters. Researchers can report an observed transform through text chat if their account has access to it. The earlier research pass recorded voice as unsupported; that does not guarantee text chat access for every account.
Community pages report a throw binding, but that binding is not officially documented in the sources used here. Do not treat E as a universal control.
What I checked
Source scope: Fandom describes a cow model holding a knife when transformed. Community behavior advice is less direct evidence than a visible weapon or model change. The strength labels on this page are editorial guidance, not measured accuracy or an official identification system.

Questions
Who is the cow?
The player whose avatar turns into a cow while the knife is out. The human form returns when the knife is put away, according to Fandom.
Do hats reveal the cow?
No source says a hat, eye color, or cow skin is assigned with the role. Those are cosmetics.
Can the cow throw the knife?
One wiki says yes, with E. Fandom does not document a throw binding. This is a gap in coverage, not proof of mutually exclusive mechanics.
